During this session, participants will explore the “why” behind transportation decisions through the lens of two transportation professionals –an engineer and a transportation planner—who also serve as President and Vice President of COMTO Kansas City. The presenters will discuss the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe System Approach, adopted in 2022 as the guiding paradigm of the National Roadway Safety Strategy. The approach shifts the transportation safety conversation from preventing all human error to designing and operating a transportation system that anticipates human mistakes, reduces exposure to risk, and limits the consequences when crashes do occur.
Reliable transportation impacts nearly every area of life. It affects a person’s ability to get to work, pursue education, access healthcare, care for family members, and build financial stability.
